Aluminum, Steel, Wood or Plastic Crochet Hooks?
Share
Two hooks with the same millimetre size can feel very different when one is metal and the other is wood or plastic.
Aluminum and other metals
Metal hooks are usually smooth and durable. Their low surface drag can help a grabby yarn move easily, though very slippery yarn may feel harder to control. Steel is commonly used for the small diameters needed for crochet thread.
Wood and bamboo
Wooden surfaces often provide a little more grip and feel warm in the hand. Finish quality matters: the shaft and head should be smooth, with no rough spots that catch fibres.
Plastic and resin
These materials allow light tools and larger sizes without the weight of solid metal. Flex and seam quality vary, so inspect the head and shaft closely.
Pair the surface with the yarn
A slippery yarn may be easier on a surface with more drag. A fuzzy or sticky yarn may move better on polished metal. Try to solve the actual problem—control, snagging, weight or balance—rather than choosing a material by reputation.
Always compare hook diameter in millimetres because letter and number labels can vary between manufacturers.
Keep this in mind
Match the hook’s weight and surface to the yarn’s behaviour, then confirm the actual size in millimetres.
