Crochet Scissors and Yarn Snips: A Practical Guide
Share
Crochet rarely needs long fabric cuts. It needs a clean yarn cut close to the work without catching neighbouring stitches.
Yarn snips
Spring-style snips open automatically and are quick for repeated trimming. Choose a design with a secure cap or lock so the blades do not sit exposed in a project bag.
Small scissors
Compact embroidery-style scissors offer precise control and are easy to use with either fine or medium yarn. Test whether the handles are comfortable and whether the points meet cleanly.
What matters most
- Sharp blades that cut rather than crush fibres.
- A fine, controllable tip.
- A protective cover or closed case.
- A size allowed by any travel rules that apply to your journey.
Reserve the tool for yarn and thread. Cutting paper, tape or wire can dull a small blade quickly. Wipe away fibre dust and store it dry.
When trimming woven ends, lift the tail slightly and cut away from the fabric. A rushed final cut can undo hours of careful stitching.
Keep this in mind
Choose controlled, protected blades and keep them dedicated to yarn.
