Crochet Seams: Whip Stitch, Mattress Stitch and Slip Stitch
Share
A seam changes both the appearance and movement of joined crochet. Samples reveal more than a method name.
Whip stitch
Pass a threaded yarn needle through matching edge loops from the same direction each time. The seam can become decorative when worked in contrast or discreet when worked in matching yarn.
Mattress-style seam
Catch corresponding horizontal strands or edge bars, alternating between pieces. Gently draw the yarn so the edges meet without puckering. The seam can sit neatly between panels when placement remains even.
Slip-stitch seam
Use a hook to join matching loops. It is quick and creates a defined ridge, which can be placed inside or displayed as a design line. Keep the loops loose enough for the seam to flex.
Before joining
Match row ends to row ends, pin or mark quarter points and use a tail long enough to finish without an extra join. Stop every few centimetres and lay the seam flat.
Keep this in mind
Choose the seam by ridge, flexibility and visibility, and align the pieces before taking the first stitch.
