Digital vs Manual Row Counters for Crochet

A row counter is only as reliable as the habit around it. Choose the format that fits the hand movement and project rather than the most elaborate feature list.

Manual counters are simple and visible

Clickers and dial counters need no charging and can stay inside a project bag. Check whether the number can change accidentally when pressed against other tools.

Digital counters offer reminders and multiple projects

An app or electronic counter may track several sections, repeats or projects. It is useful when you already keep a phone nearby, but notifications and screen locking can interrupt the rhythm.

Build one consistent trigger

Update the count immediately after finishing the row or round, never at a random point in the next one. Place a marker at the starting edge as a physical backup. Before putting the project away, write the current row in the project note as well.

Test the counter on a ten-row swatch. If the count and fabric disagree, improve the habit before trusting the device on a long project.

Keep this in mind

Choose the counter you can update without breaking rhythm, and pair it with a visible marker and written stopping note.
