How to Loosen a Foundation Chain That Is Too Tight
Share
If the first row is wider than the starting chain, the lower edge may curve or refuse to stretch with the rest of the fabric.
Make the chain on the shaft
After drawing each loop through, let it reach the straight shaft of the hook. Tightening around the narrow throat creates links that are difficult to enter.
Use a larger hook for the chain
Make a short test chain one size larger, then return to the pattern hook for the first row. Compare the edge with the gauge swatch. The adjustment should add flexibility without creating oversized gaps.
Try foundation stitches when appropriate
Foundation single or double crochet builds the base chain and first row together. It can create a flexible edge, but it changes the construction and should only replace a chain when the pattern and finish allow it.
Restart early
A tight foundation rarely becomes truly flexible through forceful blocking. If the problem is clear after a few rows, rebuilding the edge is usually cleaner than stretching it beyond its structure.
Keep this in mind
Loosen the chain before the project grows; use the shaft, a test hook change or a suitable foundation-stitch alternative.
