Foundation Double Crochet: Build Height Without a Chain
Share
Foundation double crochet combines a chain base with each double crochet. It can make a long lower edge easier to size and more flexible than a tightly worked chain.
Make the base before the post
Yarn over, insert into the current foundation point and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through one loop to create the next base chain. Complete the remaining loops as a double crochet.
Insert into the newest foundation
For the following stitch, tip the lower edge forward and insert under both strands of the base V just formed. Do not insert into the top of the double crochet. Keep the base loops open enough to find without stretching them.
Measure after several stitches
The strip may look uneven during the first few repeats. Work enough stitches for the rhythm to settle, count the top Vs and compare the lower edge with the pattern gauge. Mark intervals on long garment or blanket foundations.
Keep this in mind
Separate the one-loop base-chain step from the double-crochet steps and return to the newest lower V for every repeat.
