How to Change Yarn Colour Neatly in Crochet

Colour changes look sharpest when the new yarn becomes the working loop before the next stitch begins.

Change on the final pull-through

Begin the last stitch in the old colour. When only the final pull-through remains, place the new colour over the hook and use it to complete the stitch. The loop on the hook is now the new colour.

Position the tails

Leave enough length for secure weaving. Hold both tails toward the wrong side. Crocheting over them for a short distance can keep them controlled, but they still need to be finished appropriately for the yarn and fabric.

Plan stripes and rounds

For flat stripes, decide whether yarn will be cut or carried along the edge. For rounds, the join method affects the visible step between colours. An invisible join can finish a final colour round; other methods are needed when work continues.

Check contrast and care

Test strongly contrasting colours for colour transfer using the yarn maker’s care directions. Combine yarns with compatible washing requirements.

Keep this in mind

Bring in the new colour on the old stitch’s final pull-through and keep all tails on the intended reverse.
