Fuzzy and Halo Yarns: How to Crochet With Less Frustration

Halo can make beautiful fabric while hiding the exact loop you need. The solution is to reduce the number of things you must see.

Choose a readable setup

Use a simple stitch pattern with predictable counts. Work in strong, even lighting and place a contrasting cloth beneath the project. A hook slightly larger than you would use for a firm fabric can create more room between loops, provided the resulting gauge suits the project.

Feel as well as look

Use your non-hook hand to locate the top loops and spaces. Locking markers at edges, repeats and round beginnings keep reference points visible.

Check early and often

Count each row or round. Fuzzy yarn can be difficult to unravel cleanly because the halo catches against itself. If frogging is necessary, pull slowly in short sections instead of yanking a long length.

Let the yarn be the texture

Complicated stitch work may disappear under a strong halo. Simple silhouettes and open stitches often show the yarn more clearly and reduce frustration.

Keep this in mind

Use simple stitches, frequent counts, visible markers and a roomy—but measured—hook choice.
