How Much Yarn Do You Need? A Better Way to Estimate

Yarn estimates are affected by size, stitch density, hook, tension, fiber and construction. A single universal chart cannot capture every combination.

Use the pattern total

When following a pattern, multiply the number of balls by the length per ball. Work in metres or yards consistently. Buy by total length rather than assuming another brand’s ball count will match.

Estimate from a sample

For an original project, make a measured swatch in the real stitch pattern. Weigh it with an accurate scale, compare its area with the planned project area and use the ratio as a starting estimate. Shaping, borders and seams require additional yarn.

Add practical margin

Allow for swatching, gauge differences, joining, repairs and colour matching. A larger margin is sensible when the yarn may be difficult to replace or when dye lots matter.

Record actual use

Weigh remaining yarn at the end and note the result with the hook, size and stitch pattern. Your own finished projects become increasingly useful references.

Keep this in mind

Estimate by total length or a real swatch, then include a margin appropriate to the project and yarn availability.
