How to Join a New Skein Without a Noticeable Lump
Share
A yarn join does not need to become a hard bump. The cleanest method depends on fibre and stitch pattern, but placement and secure tails always matter.
Choose the join location
When possible, change yarn near an edge, seam or less visible area rather than in the centre of a smooth panel. Avoid placing several joins in the same vertical line. If the yarn ends unexpectedly, undo a few stitches to reach a better position.
Change at the final pull-through
Work the old yarn until the last yarn-over of the stitch. Complete that pull-through with the new strand, then continue. Hold both tails against the work for the next few stitches only if the pattern and yarn allow them to remain hidden without adding bulk.
Weave after the fabric settles
Leave generous tails and weave each one through matching-colour or matching-texture stitches in more than one direction. Do not trim flush immediately. After blocking, inspect the join and trim any remaining excess without cutting the fabric.
Keep this in mind
Place the change thoughtfully, make it on a stitch's final pull-through and secure both tails through the finished structure.
