How to Keep Crochet Project Notes You Will Understand Later

A half-finished project can sit quietly for months. Clear notes let you return without reverse-engineering your own work.

Record the setup

  • Pattern name and source.
  • Selected size and terminology system.
  • Yarn name, colour, dye lot and quantity.
  • Hook size in millimetres.
  • Gauge before and after care.

Write changes beside the original instruction

Note exactly what changed and where: “Added two plain rows after Row 18” is more useful than “made longer.” Record the new stitch count after shaping changes.

End every session with a restart note

Write the last completed row or round, the current repeat and the next action. Place a marker in the working loop and photograph the counter if one is used.

Keep notes with the project

A card inside the project bag is immediate; a digital copy protects against loss. Use the same short template each time so important details are not omitted.

Keep this in mind

Record the setup, every deliberate change and one clear sentence explaining where to resume.
