How to Measure an Unlabelled Crochet Hook
Share
A worn label does not make a crochet hook useless. The dependable question is the diameter of the working shaft, not the width of the hook head or handle.
Use a crochet hook gauge when possible
Slide the straight shaft through the gauge openings without forcing it. The correct hole allows the shaft to pass while the wider head usually remains outside. Read the millimetre value, because letter and number labels can vary across systems.
Measure the shaft, not the throat
With calipers, measure across the round, consistent part of the shaft where loops are sized. Avoid the tapered throat, flattened thumb rest and handle. A ruler is less precise for small differences, so treat it as an estimate.
Confirm with a swatch
Two hooks that measure similarly can still feel different because head shape and surface affect the motion. Label the hook with removable tape, work a small gauge sample and compare the fabric before using it for a size-sensitive project.
Store the final metric size in your hook inventory so the identification work only needs to happen once.
Keep this in mind
Measure the uniform shaft in millimetres, label the result and verify the tool with a swatch before a fitted project.
