How to Organize Crochet Hooks So Sizes Stay Easy to Find

Hook organization should answer one question quickly: which exact millimetre size am I holding?

Sort by millimetres

Arrange hooks from smallest to largest using the millimetre marking as the primary label. Letter and number systems can vary, while millimetres give a direct diameter comparison.

Choose storage that matches the collection

  • Roll-up case: compact and easy to scan.
  • Zipped binder: useful for sets, cables and small accessories.
  • Divided box: practical for ergonomic handles and specialty shapes.
  • Standing cup: convenient at a desk, but add size labels where handles hide the markings.

Separate active-project tools

Keep the hook for a current project with that project, plus a note naming its size. An empty slot or temporary card in the main case can show where the hook went.

Make unreadable sizes readable

Add small labels to worn handles or use a hook gauge to confirm diameter. Do not rely on colour alone unless every hook comes from the same colour-coded system.

Return tools after each session. A simple system used consistently is more valuable than a beautiful organizer that makes sizes hard to see.

Keep this in mind

Organize by millimetres, label clearly and record which hook is living with each active project.
