How to Plan a Crochet Cushion Cover That Fits
Share
Cushion inserts vary even when their labels show the same size. Measure the actual insert and let the crochet fabric determine the final panel dimensions.
Measure the insert in three dimensions
Record width and height across the fullest points, plus thickness. Decide whether the cover should look plump or relaxed. A very deep insert needs more fabric than a flat square measurement suggests.
Use the washed gauge
Make and wash a representative swatch. Measure it resting naturally and test how much it stretches before becoming see-through. Calculate each panel from that gauge rather than using the unblocked starting chain.
Allow for the closure
An envelope back needs enough overlap to stay closed when the cushion is compressed. Buttons or zippers require stable edges and seam allowance. Pin or baste panels around the insert before final seaming to catch fit issues while adjustment is still possible.
Keep this in mind
Measure the real insert, calculate from washed fabric and include closure depth before cutting yarn or closing the final seam.
