How to Test Yarn Before Committing to a Crochet Project
Share
The ball band gives useful specifications, but it cannot show exactly how a yarn will behave with your hook, hands, stitch pattern and chosen colour.
Inspect the strand first
Unwind a few metres and look for knots, thin areas, thick sections, loose plies or excessive shedding. Rub a damp white cloth lightly over a dark or saturated sample to check for colour transfer, without assuming this replaces proper washing.
Crochet a useful-sized swatch
Use the intended hook and stitch pattern. A tiny square may not reveal drape or colour pooling, so include several full repeats and a border if the project will have one. Note whether the yarn splits, snags or tires your hands.
Wash, dry and live with it
Follow the label care instructions, allow the swatch to dry completely and compare the measurements. Check softness, halo, pilling and stitch definition. For a garment, pin the swatch up for a day to observe growth; for a bag, place light pressure on it to judge structure.
Keep this in mind
Inspect, crochet, wash and remeasure one representative sample; the small test is cheaper than discovering a mismatch halfway through.
