How to Weave In Crochet Ends That Stay Put

Weaving in ends is part of the construction, not an afterthought. The aim is to secure the tail without creating a hard ridge or visible shadow.

Use the fabric’s path

Thread the tail onto a blunt yarn needle. On the wrong side, pass through the bases or posts of several nearby stitches, staying within the same colour area. Avoid splitting through open gaps where the tail may show.

Change direction

Turn and travel back through a neighbouring path. A change of direction gives the yarn more resistance than one long straight pass. For thick yarn, separate the route into shorter passes so one area does not become bulky.

Let the fabric settle before trimming

Stretch the fabric gently in the directions it will move during use. If the tail stays hidden, trim it close without cutting the working stitches. For slippery yarn, a longer path may be needed.

Colour changes are easier to manage when ends are woven into matching areas. On reversible work, follow the stitch structure carefully and inspect both faces after each pass.

Do not rely on a short tail or surface knot to do the work of proper weaving.

Keep this in mind

Weave through matching stitches, reverse direction and test the fabric before trimming the tail.
