Magic Ring vs Chain Ring: When to Use Each
Share
Round projects need a centre that holds the first group of stitches. The desired opening and the yarn’s behaviour can guide the method.
Magic ring
Stitches are worked over an adjustable loop, then the tail is pulled to close the centre. This creates a small opening and is popular for motifs and three-dimensional work. Slippery or fragile yarn can make the loop harder to secure.
Chain ring
Make the number of chains directed, join them into a ring and work the first round into the centre. The opening stays fixed and may be easier to handle with fuzzy yarn. A short chain ring can also be used as an alternative to an adjustable loop.
Secure either start
Closing a magic ring does not finish the tail. Weave it through the backs of nearby stitches and change direction. Treat the chain-ring tail with the same care.
For items that will be pulled, washed often or hold filling, inspect the centre after finishing and follow any project-specific reinforcement instructions.
Keep this in mind
Choose an adjustable or fixed centre based on the design and yarn, then weave the starting tail securely.
