Plant-Based Yarns Beyond Cotton
Share
Plant-based yarn shelves extend beyond cotton. Each option arrives with its own processing, construction and blend, so broad labels deserve a closer read.
Linen and hemp
These bast-fiber yarns are often selected for strength and a fabric that softens with handling. Some feel firm while being worked, so a larger swatch is useful for judging the finished drape.
Bamboo-labelled yarns
Many yarns marketed with bamboo are regenerated cellulose fibers rather than a strand of raw bamboo. Read the full fiber description. These yarns may feel smooth and drapey, but construction determines how much they split or stretch.
Blends change the balance
Plant fibers are frequently blended with cotton, wool or synthetics to adjust body, elasticity, care or price. Compare the percentages and the care symbols.
Test for the project
Make and wash a swatch before committing to a fitted item. Check lengthwise growth, edge stability, stitch definition and how the fabric feels when dry. For bags or homewares, also consider weight and structure.
Keep this in mind
Read the full fiber description and use a washed swatch to judge drape, growth and care.
