Recycled Yarn for Crochet: What to Check on the Label
Share
Recycled yarn can be a useful material choice, but the word “recycled” does not predict softness, strength, stretch or wash care. The complete label remains essential.
Identify what was recycled
Read the fibre-content line and percentages. A yarn may contain recycled cotton, wool, polyester or a mixture, each with different behaviour. Look for any certification or sourcing explanation on the manufacturer information, but do not infer claims the label does not make.
Compare usable quantity
Record yardage or metres as well as ball weight. A 100-gram ball can contain very different lengths depending on fibre and construction. Buy enough from the same colour lot when the label provides one, since later batches may not match exactly.
Make a durability swatch
Crochet a sample, rub it gently against itself and wash it according to the care symbols. Check shedding, pilling, colour movement and changes in size. This small test is especially important for bags, blankets or garments that will see repeated use.
Keep this in mind
Evaluate recycled yarn with the same evidence as any other yarn: full composition, length, care, colour lot and a washed sample.
