What to Do When You Run Out of Yarn Mid-Project

Stop before the last few centimetres disappear into a partial row. A useful tail leaves room for a clean join or finish.

Use the brand, yarn name, colour number, dye lot, fiber, weight and length. A matching dye lot is ideal, but compare any replacement in natural light before joining.
Blend a slight shade difference
If the yarn is the same colour but a different lot, alternate old and new yarn across several rows where the stitch pattern allows. This distributes the change rather than creating one boundary.
Make contrast intentional
Add a repeated stripe, border, cuff or motif colour. Repeat the new colour in more than one location so it reads as a design decision.
Adjust the finish
For non-fitted projects, a shorter length or narrower border may work. For garments and sized pieces, preserve the pattern measurements and avoid removing structural rows without recalculating the design.
Record the final yarn use to improve future estimates.
Keep this in mind
Preserve enough tail to stop cleanly, then match, blend or repeat a contrast rather than hiding an abrupt change.
