Single Crochet: How to Make Clean, Even Stitches
Share
Single crochet creates compact fabric and a clear row of top Vs. It is simple enough to learn quickly and structured enough to reveal tension changes.
Use the full stitch
In U.S. terminology: insert the hook under the loops named by the pattern, yarn over and pull up one loop. Two loops are now on the hook. Yarn over again and pull through both.
Lift the first loop consistently
After pulling up a loop, bring it to roughly the height of the current row before completing the stitch. A very low loop creates tight fabric; an exaggerated loop creates uneven posts.
Keep the edges visible
Mark the first stitch of each row and count the top Vs before turning. Many widening or narrowing problems are missing or extra edge stitches rather than tension alone.
Let the hook size the loop
Do not tighten each completed stitch around the hook throat. Let the loop rest on the straight shaft, then begin the next stitch. After several rows, inspect the fabric flat rather than judging one stitch at a time.
Keep this in mind
Work into the intended loops, lift the first loop evenly and mark both row edges while building consistency.
