What “Work Even” Means in a Crochet Pattern
Share
“Work even” sounds informal, but it gives a precise instruction: keep the current shape and stitch count while continuing the pattern as established.
Preserve the stitch count
Do not add or remove shaping stitches during the stated rows or rounds. Count at the start of the section and at regular intervals. In a shaped project, this creates a straight or unchanged portion between increase and decrease sections.
Continue the established pattern
Working even does not always mean repeating one identical row. If the stitch pattern uses a multi-row repeat, continue through that repeat while keeping the total count stable. Maintain colour changes, chain spaces and texture placements unless the instructions say otherwise.
Know when to stop
The pattern may give a number of rows, a finished measurement or a phrase such as “until the piece measures.” Mark the first row of the even section so the length is measured from the correct point.
If the fabric starts widening despite a stable written count, check whether edge chains or spaces are being treated as extra stitches.
Keep this in mind
Work even means continue the established fabric without shaping until the stated row count or measurement is reached.
