Why Are My Crochet Colour Changes Slanting?
Share
A colour boundary follows the structure of the stitches beneath it. In rounds or textured fabrics, that structure may naturally lean rather than form a perfectly vertical line.
Change on the final pull-through
Work the preceding stitch until its last yarn-over, then complete that pull-through with the new colour. This places the new loop on the hook before the next stitch begins and usually gives a cleaner top edge.
Inspect the round join
Joined rounds can create a visible step, while continuous spirals move the colour transition forward each round. Use the pattern's jog-reduction method if one is provided, but expect different results from different constructions.
Keep both yarns relaxed
Do not pull the old tail or carried strand so tightly that the boundary contracts. Work several stitches, then spread them to normal width before adjusting loose loops. If a charted motif slants unexpectedly, verify the insertion points and stitch count before changing tension.
Keep this in mind
Switch colours during the previous stitch's final pull-through and account for the natural movement of the chosen round construction.
