Yarn Weights 0–7 Explained
Share
A “weight 4” yarn is not a four-gram skein. The number places its thickness within a standard category used to guide hook and gauge choices.
The eight categories
- 0 Lace
- 1 Super Fine
- 2 Fine
- 3 Light
- 4 Medium
- 5 Bulky
- 6 Super Bulky
- 7 Jumbo
Names such as fingering, sport, DK and worsted are also used, but naming can vary by brand and market. The numbered category creates a shared starting point.
A category is still a range
Two yarns carrying the same weight number may differ in thickness, fibre, construction and finished fabric. Compare length per ball, strand structure and a swatch rather than assuming they are interchangeable.
Use the number with the project
The standard system includes suggested hook and gauge ranges, not fixed rules. A lace pattern and a dense basket can use the same yarn with very different hooks. When following a pattern, its gauge remains the target.
Keep this in mind
Use the 0–7 category to narrow the field, then compare the actual yarn and make a swatch.
