Basketweave Crochet: Planning Post-Stitch Texture
Share
Basketweave texture comes from post stitches that push groups forward and backward. The fabric is thick, yarn-hungry and most readable when the blocks stay aligned.
Build a stable foundation
Work the setup row and stitch multiple exactly as written. Post stitches wrap around posts from the previous row, so a missing base stitch can shift every block above it.
Count groups, not just stitches
Mark the beginning of each front-post and back-post group during the first repeat. After the stated number of rows, reverse the group order to create the woven effect. Use a row counter so each block reaches equal height.
Allow for thickness
Make a large washed swatch and measure it without compressing the relief. The stitch uses more yarn than a flat fabric of similar dimensions and can become heavy in blankets. Keep the edge stitches ordinary if the pattern provides them; they offer a flatter place for borders or seams.
Keep this in mind
Protect the stitch multiple, count complete post groups and budget for a thicker fabric with higher yarn use.
