Centre-Pull or Outside-Pull? Choosing How to Start a Skein

Both yarn ends lead to the same project. Choose the feed that stays smooth for the package in front of you.

Centre-pull

A centre strand can feed while the skein remains mostly still. Finding it sometimes pulls out a loose bundle known informally as yarn barf. Untangle that bundle before stitching rather than pulling harder.

As the centre empties, the outer shell may collapse. A yarn sleeve, bowl or small container can support it.

Outside-pull

The outside end is usually easy to locate and creates fewer surprises inside the skein. The ball or skein may roll or rotate, so contain it in a clean bag or bowl where it can move freely.

When using two ends

Some projects hold two strands together from one cake. Drawing one from the centre and one from the outside can work, but the strands may twist around each other. Pause periodically and let the cake or project unwind.

If either feed snags repeatedly, stop and reorganize. Steady yarn delivery supports steady tension.

Keep this in mind

Use the end that feeds without snagging and give the skein the support it needs as its shape changes.
