Wraps Per Inch: A Useful Clue When the Yarn Label Is Missing
Share
When a label is missing, wraps per inch—often shortened to WPI—offers a repeatable way to compare strand thickness.
Make the wraps
Lay the yarn around a ruler or WPI tool in adjacent wraps without gaps. Do not pull tight or compress the strand. Count how many wraps fit within one inch. Take more than one measurement if the yarn changes thickness.
Compare cautiously
More wraps generally indicate a finer yarn; fewer wraps indicate a thicker one. Published WPI ranges can help place the strand near a weight category, but fiber, halo and measuring tension introduce variation.
Finish with a swatch
Choose a likely hook range, make a sample and assess the actual fabric. If matching an existing project, compare both the WPI and the swatch with the original yarn.
Record the result
Attach a temporary label with WPI, measured length or weight if known, fiber information if known and the date. Mark uncertain details as unknown rather than guessing.
Keep this in mind
Measure WPI without stretching the yarn, then confirm the estimate through a swatch.
