Should You Buy a Crochet Hook Set or Single Hooks?

The better purchase depends less on the number of hooks and more on how clearly you know your preferred projects and handle style.

When a set makes sense

A well-spaced set is useful when you crochet across several yarn weights or need neighbouring sizes for gauge adjustments. A fitted case also keeps labels visible and sizes together.

Check the actual millimetre range rather than the advertised piece count. Some sets skip intermediate diameters or include duplicates that do not suit your work.

When single hooks are smarter

If you are new to crochet, buy the hook required for your first project and test the design. The same approach works for a specialty size you may use only once. Single hooks also let you mix handle shapes and materials based on yarn behaviour.

A practical middle path

Build a small core around the sizes you reach for most, then add neighbouring diameters as patterns require them. Keep a note of the exact size, material and head style you like.

More hooks do not automatically create more options if the handles are uncomfortable or the range does not match your yarn.

Keep this in mind

Buy a set for a useful size range and a proven handle style; otherwise build your collection one purposeful hook at a time.
