Extended Single Crochet: Height, Drape and Best Uses

Extended single crochet is taller than standard single crochet but remains simpler and less open than many taller stitches. Terminology can vary, so confirm the pattern's special-stitch note.

Add the extension first

Insert the hook, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through one loop only; this creates the extension. Yarn over again and pull through the two loops remaining on the hook.

Keep the extra chain consistent

The height depends on how far you lift the first loop and how tightly you make the internal chain. Work slowly across the first swatch, checking that the row does not alternate between short and tall stitches.

Use it for smoother height

The stitch can create a fabric with more movement than ordinary single crochet and less horizontal bar emphasis than half double crochet. Try it for light garments, panels or transitions where a modest increase in height is useful. Always swatch because turning chains and edge treatment affect the final row count.

Keep this in mind

Form the extra one-loop chain before finishing the stitch, and keep that movement relaxed and equal across the row.
