Foundation Single Crochet: When and How to Use It
Share
Foundation single crochet can replace a long starting chain plus the first single-crochet row. Each stitch creates its own base chain before the upper stitch is completed.
Recognize the two parts
After inserting into the established foundation point, pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through one loop to create the new base chain. Then yarn over and pull through both remaining loops to finish the single crochet above it.
Return to the base chain
For the next stitch, insert under both strands of the base just created rather than into the upper stitch loops. Tilting the work toward you can make that small V easier to see.
Count as you build
Place a marker every ten or twenty stitches on a long foundation. The method can produce a more elastic lower edge than a tight chain, but it is not automatically correct for every pattern. Compare a short sample with the stated gauge and edge appearance.
Keep this in mind
Create the base chain first and the single crochet second in every stitch, returning to the newest base V each time.
