Foundation Half Double Crochet: A Steadier First Row
Share
Foundation half double crochet builds width and stitch height at the same time. It is useful when a separate starting chain feels tight or difficult to count.
Build the first foundation
Begin with the setup specified by the pattern. Yarn over, insert into the foundation point and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through one loop to make the base chain, then yarn over and pull through all remaining loops to complete the half double crochet.
Find the next base V
Turn the lower edge slightly toward you. Insert under both strands of the base chain you just made, not under the top loops of the finished stitch. Missing one strand can leave a loose or uneven lower edge.
Control the extra height
Lift the loops consistently before each pull-through. Count finished stitch tops and place markers along long foundations. If the edge curves, compare tension with a larger-hook starting method before deciding which foundation works best for the project.
Keep this in mind
Keep the base-chain pull-through distinct from the final stitch, and insert under both strands of each new foundation V.
