Filet Crochet Basics: Reading Open and Filled Mesh
Share
Filet crochet uses a grid of open and filled cells. The image becomes clear when every cell has consistent width and height.
Read cells rather than stitches
An open cell commonly combines a tall stitch, chain space and next tall stitch, while a filled cell replaces the open area with stitches. Exact cell construction varies, so use the pattern key.
Remember shared boundaries
Adjacent cells share vertical posts. Do not count every drawn square as a completely separate set of stitches. Mark chart rows as they are completed and use a ruler or magnetic strip to stay on the correct line.
Swatch a small motif
Measure several cells in both directions after blocking. If cells are much wider than tall, the chart image can stretch sideways; adjusting hook size or stitch height may help. Maintain relaxed chain spaces so open cells do not pull inward.
Keep this in mind
Follow the chart key, account for shared cell posts and block a sample to confirm that the grid proportions suit the image.
