Intarsia Crochet: Working With Separate Colour Sections
Share
Intarsia assigns a separate yarn supply to each colour area. It avoids carrying a strand across wide sections, but it creates more working ends and direction changes.
Prepare one supply per section
Wind small bobbins or butterflies with enough yarn for each colour block. Label similar shades and arrange them in the same order as the chart. Add a new supply when a colour appears in a separate, non-touching area.
Link colours at the boundary
Before changing colour, bring the new strand into position and cross it with the old strand as the method directs. Complete the preceding stitch with the new colour. A consistent link helps prevent holes without creating a bulky knot.
Untangle by turning deliberately
Choose a consistent direction for turning at row ends, then periodically set the work down and separate the bobbins. Leave relaxed spans at boundaries so colour sections do not pull toward one another. Weave tails through matching colours after the fabric has settled.
Keep this in mind
Use separate labeled supplies, link each colour boundary consistently and manage the bobbins before tangles tighten into the fabric.
