Mosaic Crochet: Inset vs Overlay Methods

Mosaic crochet uses one working colour at a time to build patterns over previous rows. Inset and overlay methods share that idea but organize stitches differently.

Understand inset mosaic

Inset mosaic often works two rows in each colour and uses chains to create gaps. Stitches in a later colour are worked into designated rows below through those gaps. The back generally shows horizontal colour bands with limited long floats.

Understand overlay mosaic

Overlay mosaic commonly changes colour every row or round. Back-loop stitches maintain the base while drop-down front-loop stitches cover earlier rows. Written notation and chart symbols are method-specific, so use the designer's key.

Choose by construction

Swatch both if you are designing rather than following a pattern. Compare thickness, back appearance, edge tails and how the colour repeat fits the intended item. Never assume a chart written for one method can be crocheted with the other without redesign.

Keep this in mind

Identify whether a pattern is inset or overlay mosaic before reading its chart; the colour schedule and stitch placement are not interchangeable.
