Overlay Crochet: Managing Front-Layer Stitches
Share
Overlay crochet places selected stitches over earlier rounds, often by reaching into unworked loops below. The raised layer depends on accurate placement and generous stitch height.
Read the base as a map
Before starting an overlay round, identify the lower round and stitch specified. Count visible stitch columns and mark repeated target points. Use the pattern's front-loop or back-loop instructions exactly because the unused loop may anchor a later detail.
Lift long stitches fully
Insert at the lower target and draw the loop up to the current working round before completing the stitch. A short loop pulls the motif inward; an overly loose loop can sit away from the surface and snag.
Check the fabric between repeats
Lay the work flat after each motif section. Confirm that the base has not cupped and that every raised line lands in the same relative position. Keep floats and tails on the back tidy so they do not show through open areas.
Keep this in mind
Mark lower-round targets, raise every overlay loop to the current height and check that the base stays flat.
