How to Build a Crochet Colour Palette That Feels Intentional

Colour choices become easier when each yarn has a role rather than competing equally for attention.

Choose an anchor

Begin with one colour that fits the project’s purpose or the yarn you already own. Add one or two supporting colours that are lighter, darker, quieter or warmer in a way that supports the anchor.

Check value, not only hue

Photograph the yarns together and view the image in grayscale. If they all become the same grey, the design may rely on subtle colour rather than strong contrast. That can be beautiful, but detailed motifs may need clearer value differences.

Test the proportions

Wrap yarn around a card in approximate stripe widths or make a small motif. A colour that looks overpowering as a whole skein may be perfect as a narrow accent.

Consider repetition

Repeat an accent at least once so it feels connected to the design. For many colours, establish a sequence or rule rather than changing at random.

Check all yarns for compatible gauge and care before the palette becomes a project.

Keep this in mind

Give colours distinct roles, test value and proportion, and repeat accents with intention.
