Swatch, Wash, Measure: A Better Project-Planning Routine
Share
The first measurement shows how you crochet. The second shows how the finished fabric may behave in use.
Make it representative
Use the actual yarn, hook and pattern stitch. Make the swatch larger than the area being measured and include colourwork or texture if those features affect the fabric.
Record the first state
Measure stitch and row gauge in the centre. Note the hook size, fabric feel and dimensions. Photograph the swatch beside the label.
Follow the intended care
Wash or finish the sample according to the yarn label and pattern. Do not test a treatment you would not use on the final piece. Let it dry completely in the intended shape.
Measure again
Compare width, height, drape, surface and colour. Calculate fitted dimensions from the finished gauge, not the fresh-off-the-hook number.
Keep the swatch with its notes until the project is complete. It can later test stain removal, repairs or care.
Keep this in mind
Record gauge before and after the intended care routine, then plan from the finished measurement.
