How to Check Your Crochet Work Every Few Rows

A project rarely goes wrong in one dramatic moment. More often, a quiet mistake repeats for several rows because no checkpoint asked the work to prove that it still matches the plan.

Check the count at useful intervals

Count every row while learning a new pattern. Once the repeat is stable, count at the end of each repeat or shaping section. Mark groups of ten or twenty stitches on long rows to make recounting faster.

Compare shape and measurements

Lay the piece flat without stretching. Check that edges remain straight, motifs are similar and the width has not slowly changed. For fitted work, compare the length and width with the pattern at the stated checkpoints.

Inspect the details that are easy to forget

  • Right side and wrong side
  • Colour order and dye lot
  • Beginning of a round
  • Placement of increases or decreases
  • Enough yarn remaining for the next section

Keep the project note beside the work and update it before putting the piece away. A checkpoint should take less time than repairing the problem it is designed to catch.

Keep this in mind

Count, lay the work flat and compare it with the pattern before a small error has time to become a project-wide one.
