How to Fasten Off Crochet Neatly

Fastening off is simple, but the last few centimetres of yarn still need a plan. A secure finish leaves enough tail to weave in properly.

Secure the final loop

  1. Complete the final stitch.
  2. Cut the yarn, leaving a practical weaving tail rather than trimming close to the fabric.
  3. Draw the cut end completely through the loop on the hook.
  4. Pull gently until the loop closes into a small, secure finish.

Do not pull so hard that the final stitch becomes distorted. The fastening point should sit naturally beside the last stitch.

Match the finish to the edge

On a visible round, an invisible join can create a smoother top edge than a standard fasten-off. On a seam allowance or hidden edge, the straightforward method is usually enough.

Keep the tail useful

The tail is not waste; it is the material used to anchor the end. Thread it onto a blunt yarn needle and weave it through stitches of the same colour and texture. If the piece will be stretched or washed, change direction at least once rather than travelling in one straight line.

Keep this in mind

Close the last loop gently and preserve enough yarn to weave the end through the fabric securely.
