How to Plan a Crochet Tote That Holds Its Shape
Share
A tote may look structured while empty and stretch dramatically when filled. Plan for the weight it will carry rather than judging only the flat fabric.
Choose a stable fabric
Swatch a firm stitch with a yarn that has appropriate strength and manageable stretch. Place sample weight on the washed swatch for a short test. If it lengthens greatly, consider denser fabric, reinforcement or lining.
Build a reliable base and handles
Use the pattern's increase count so the base lies flat. Reinforce handle attachment across a wider area instead of relying on one stitch. Test whether the handle length changes when gently loaded.
Plan the lining and closure early
A fitted lining supports contents and prevents small objects pushing through stitches. Decide on pockets, zipper or button before finishing the opening, because these additions may need a stable facing. Avoid claiming a handmade bag can carry a particular load without a proper construction test.
Keep this in mind
Test the washed fabric under gentle load and design the base, handles and lining as one supporting system.
