How to Remove Pilling From Crochet Carefully

Pills form when loose fibres rub together at the surface. Removing them can improve appearance, but aggressive cutting can weaken the crochet itself.

Clean and dry the item first

Follow the care label and let the piece dry completely. Lay it on a firm, flat surface in bright light. Test the least visible area before treating the public side.

Use light, controlled passes

Choose a tool intended for the fabric and fibre: a fine comb, sweater stone or guarded fabric shaver may be suitable. Hold the crochet flat and work gently in one small area. Keep blades away from raised stitches, fringe and loose ends.

Know when to stop

Remove only fibres already lifted from the surface. Repeatedly shaving the same area can thin the yarn and change stitch definition. If the fabric catches, the tool exposes strands or the yarn has a delicate halo, stop and trim only obvious loose pills individually with great care.

Keep this in mind

Support the dry fabric, test a gentle tool and remove only surface pills without cutting into the structural yarn.
