What to Do When Your Yarn Keeps Splitting

A split stitch leaves part of the yarn behind, weakens the clean outline and can make the next row difficult to read.

Slow the insertion

Watch the hook tip enter the stitch before making the yarn over. Aim through the opening and rotate the head so it passes around the working strand rather than piercing it.

Give the stitch room

Very tight tension leaves little space for the hook. Relax the working loop or test the next hook size on a swatch, then check whether the fabric still meets the required gauge.

Try another head shape

A sharper tip may enter dense stitches but catch loosely plied yarn. A rounder head may move around the strand more cleanly. Surface finish also matters; rough joins or seams can snag fibers.

Manage loosened twist

If the strand begins opening as you work, let the project or yarn source rotate to release built-up twist. Pulling yarn from a different end can also change how twist behaves, but swatch before restarting a large section.

Keep this in mind

Create more insertion space, guide the head around the full strand and test a hook shape that suits the yarn’s twist.
