How to Substitute Yarn Without Guessing
Share
Replacing the pattern yarn is possible, but a shared weight number alone does not guarantee the same fabric or yardage.
Build a comparison list
- Yarn-weight category and actual strand thickness.
- Fiber content and expected drape.
- Metres or yards per ball.
- Care instructions.
- Colour availability and dye lots.
Calculate by length, not ball count
If a pattern calls for five balls, note the length in each original ball and calculate the total. Divide that total by the length in the substitute ball, then allow a sensible margin. Balls of equal weight can contain different lengths.
Make the pattern swatch
Use the project stitch and adjust hook size until the gauge matches. Then wash and dry the swatch according to the substitute yarn’s label. Check measurement, drape and surface.
Respect the project’s function
A substitute that matches gauge can still be too heavy, stiff or delicate for the intended use. The best replacement reproduces the useful behaviour, not merely the stitch count.
Keep this in mind
Compare total length, construction, care and washed gauge before treating a yarn as a true substitute.
