How to Work Into Crochet Spaces Instead of Stitches
Share
Patterns use “space” when several stitches belong around a chain or between stitch groups. The insertion point changes, but each completed stitch still counts normally.
Find the opening, not the loop
Slide the hook through the open area beneath the chain or between groups, then bring it back to the front around that structure. Unless the pattern says otherwise, do not split the chain strand itself.
Spread the stitches after working
Several stitches placed in one space can bunch together. Nudge them along the chain so the group sits evenly, but do not stretch the opening beyond its natural width.
Count stitches and spaces separately
A space is a location; it is not an extra stitch. Use a marker in corner spaces when making motifs and count the actual stitch tops after completing each group. If a pattern diagram is provided, compare the symbols with the written instruction to confirm placement.
Keep this in mind
Insert around the chain or between groups, distribute the completed stitches evenly and keep location counts separate from stitch counts.
