Moss Stitch: Simple Texture With Clean Colour Changes
Share
Also called linen stitch in many patterns, moss stitch is built by working into chain spaces rather than every stitch top.
Find the rhythm
A common version alternates one single crochet and one chain, then places each single crochet into the chain space from the row below. Follow the pattern’s edge instructions because setup and turning methods vary.
Mark the first and last spaces
The chain space beside an edge stitch can be easy to overlook. Use markers until the pattern columns become visible.
Change colour at the final pull-through
For a clean row change, begin the last stitch with the old colour and complete its final pull-through with the new colour. Turn and continue according to the pattern. Carry unused yarn only when the distance and fabric make that practical.
Keep chains relaxed
Tight chain spaces make the next row difficult and can pull the fabric inward. Size each chain on the shaft and let the short stitch sit naturally beside it.
Keep this in mind
Work into the chain spaces, protect the edge spaces and keep each separating chain relaxed.
