Steel Crochet Hooks: What They Are Used For
Share
A steel crochet hook is not simply a heavier version of a regular hook. It is a fine tool designed for thread and other delicate materials.
Why steel is used
Very small hook heads need strength and a smooth, precise finish. Steel supports the tiny diameters commonly used for lace, edgings and thread crochet.
Read the millimetre size
Steel-hook numbering can run in the opposite direction from regular hook labels: a higher steel number may indicate a smaller hook. Number systems also vary. The millimetre measurement is the clearest way to compare tools from different manufacturers.
Pair with thread carefully
Crochet thread also uses its own size system. Choose the pattern and thread first, then use the suggested steel-hook diameter as the starting point. Make a gauge sample when finished size matters.
Protect the point
Fine steel heads can catch on other items and may be sharp enough to damage a project bag. Store them in a fitted case or use a point protector where appropriate. Keep each size clearly labelled because neighbouring diameters can be difficult to distinguish by eye.
Keep this in mind
Choose steel hooks by millimetre diameter and store the fine heads carefully.
