T-Shirt Yarn for Crochet: Hook Choice, Strain and Structure

T-shirt yarn is wide and comparatively heavy, so every loop asks more from the hands than a light spun yarn. A comfortable setup matters as much as the final stitch.

Compare width and stretch

Fabric yarn is not always uniform. Check several metres for changes in width, joins and elasticity before starting. If using recycled strips, test whether the cut edges curl consistently and whether the colour transfers when damp.

Choose the hook by fabric

The label suggestion is a starting point. Swatch with a hook large enough that you are not forcing it through tight loops, then assess the resulting gaps and stiffness. A basket needs more body than a floor mat or casual bag.

Reduce strain while working

Let the whole forearm make small movements instead of pinching hard with the fingers. Keep the yarn close so you are not dragging a heavy ball across the floor, take frequent pauses and stop if discomfort develops. Work at a table when the growing project becomes too heavy for the lap.

Keep this in mind

Swatch for the required structure, keep the large loops relaxed and arrange the project so its weight does not pull on your hands.
