Why Does Chenille Yarn Worm Out of Crochet?
Share
“Worming” describes loops or coils that push out from plush fabric. It is influenced by yarn construction, tension, stitch choice, friction and washing.
Test whether the yarn shifts
Rub and flex a swatch, then wash it exactly as the label directs. Watch for the pile sliding along the core, loops escaping from stitches or ends shedding. Different chenille yarns behave differently.
Adjust the fabric, not just the tail
A denser stitch and suitable hook may give the strand more support, but an extremely tight fabric can be difficult to work and may still shift. Compare two small swatches rather than changing the full project blindly.
Secure joins carefully
Leave generous tails and weave through several sturdy stitch paths. A simple knot hidden in loose pile is not enough if the smooth core can slide. If washed samples continue to worm badly, reserve the yarn for low-friction decor or choose a more stable construction.
Keep this in mind
Use a washed friction test to decide whether stitch density can control worming or whether the yarn needs a different project.
