Why Does My Crochet Gauge Change Mid-Project?
Share
Matching the starting swatch does not guarantee identical tension through a long project. Pace, posture, tool grip and the weight of the growing fabric can all influence loop size.
Measure more than one section
Lay the work flat without stretching and measure stitch and row gauge in several representative areas away from borders. Compare the early, middle and recent fabric using the same ruler and method.
Look for a process change
Ask whether the hook changed, the new skein feels different, the working posture shifted or the fabric began hanging from the hands. Fatigue can also tighten or loosen movements. Check the hook's millimetre marking rather than its colour or letter.
Correct before adding length
Return to the original relaxed motion and support a heavy project on a table or cushion. If gauge remains different, make a short comparison swatch before changing hook size. For fitted work, undo to a stable gauge point rather than hoping blocking will erase a large change.
Keep this in mind
Measure multiple areas, identify what changed in the working setup and correct it before the difference accumulates.
