Why Does My Crochet Seam Look Bulky?
Share
A seam combines two fabric edges, so some extra thickness is unavoidable. The goal is a secure join that suits the fabric rather than one universal invisible method.
Inspect the edges first
Count the rows or stitches to be joined and mark matching intervals. Unequal edges bunch when forced together. Trim no tails until the seam placement and right sides are confirmed.
Choose a method by purpose
Slip-stitch and single-crochet seams are sturdy and can be decorative, but they add a ridge. Mattress-style sewing through selected edge bars can lie flatter. Test both on small swatches made in the project stitch.
Ease without tightening
Join one matched interval at a time and keep the sewing yarn long enough for the fabric to flex. Pulling each pass hard compresses the edges into a cord. Stop periodically, open the seam and check that it lies naturally without holes or puckers.
Keep this in mind
Match the edges, sample a suitably flat join and tension the seam for movement rather than maximum tightness.
